Gas Fire Efficiency Explained
It can be very confusing when shopping around for a gas fire. All the different figures of net outputs, gross outputs, inputs and and efficiencies – but what’s important and what’s not?
A good place to start is by checking if the fire has been tested by BSI. This means the figures are tested by an impartial company so they cannot tweak the outcomes. Most fires now should be tested by BSI but there is a good way to check – if the fire burns say 7kw of gas (input) and gives out 3.5kw of heat (output) you know it’s 50% efficient (3.5kw being half of 7kw). If that same fire purports to be 80% efficient you now know it’s not the case and it’s a play on words.
The most efficient fires on the market are glass fronted. There’s almost no open fronted gas fires that can be sold as high efficiency other than Nu-Flame. Their fires are BSI rated and have an excellent range of open fronted gas fires which offer great heat and efficiency.
